Most of my time has been spent living in accommodation that I've bought. I've always given a lot of thought to this whole business of why we live in houses or flats.
It's interesting to me that people can choose very different living environments. In Sussex, the English county I live in, we do have travellers in small clusters of caravans and mini-buses. I love the fact that they are there even though the "sites" are much smaller than in Ireland, where I come from originally. When I'm out cycling over the South Downs it's very nice to encounter these small groups of travellers. Much better I feel than the twee little towns to be found in Sussex full of the conservative voting middle classes resplendent with 4 X 4s etc.
In a town called Shoreham, not far from where I live, there are a lot of house boats. I really like these and could see myself living like that very easily.
As it happens I have lived all my life in flats and houses like most people. I don't see this changing, but I do like to dream of a different form of habitat from time to time.
