Moulton R18

My R18 is a very nice example of the Moultons built by Pashley. It is from the last of the range known as APBs (All Purpose Bicycles) which predated the current TSRs from Pashley.

I use the R18 for touring. The only cycling I do is touring and commuting; I'm not a sports cyclist by any means.

My Moulton R18 is pretty standard by and large the only notable addition is the Scottoiler chain lubrication system my experiences of which I've documented in a separate page at this site.

As a model I think the R18 was really directed at the sort of buyer with an interest in Audax. The name "R18" has an R which sort of suggests "Road" and it came with aero rims which hinted at "Road" as well.

I see use it entirely as a touring bicycle. This is my type of touring which is pretty slow. I don't do Audax or anything like that.

It came with a Brooks B17 which was an extremely good thing. I think that it was supposed to have the narrow version of the saddle but mine had a standard one. I was happy with that as I use the standard saddle myself normally. Quite nice not to have to buy another Brooks saddle for it.

Looking at the current range of TSRs from Pashley I think it's a shame that something like the R18 has not been included. I feel that it would be good to have a touring bicycle with a nine speed cassette and a Brooks saddle. It's true, I guess, that Pashley know what sells and what doesn't and maybe the R18 just wasn't a bit seller.

The R18 has two chainrings and a nine speed cassette. The gear range of this is just a little bit larger than my AM7, however it does have more closely spaced gears. Personally I rather like single chainring bicycles but for this all purpose touring bicycle the extra bottom gear I get is very useful.
